Volunteer teachers versed in the dramatic and musical arts are
always welcome to lend their talents to the Staten Island Children's
Theatre Association, the SIMHS's self-sustaining program that promotes
positive mental health and self-confidence in young people.
The Children's Theater Performing Arts Company sponsors three dramatic
workshop series each year for budding thespians or returning stage
veterans 5- to-18-years-old. Tuition is moderate, and a limited number
of scholarships are available.
The program director and her predominantly volunteer staff teach
the children all aspects of the theatre arts, and each workshop culminates
in the children performing a classic Broadway musical for school
classes and the public. Every child in the workshop gets a chance
to perform on stage. As their training in the theatre arts progresses,
the children learn the value of commitment and teamwork, develop
their creative expression, and hone their socialization and communication
skills.
Many of the older performers have been with the Children's Theatre
troupe since they were kindergartners, and alumni often return to
pass on their skills. Volunteer teachers are always welcome.
